What Your Alternator Does

Your battery starts the car. After that, the alternator takes over. It’s turned by a belt on the engine, and it makes the power that runs your lights, heater fan, and everything else, while topping the battery back up as you drive.

When the alternator starts to wear out, the battery slowly does all the work on its own. It drains a little more every trip until one day the car won’t start, or it stalls while you’re driving.

Edmonton winters don’t help. Cold mornings make the battery work harder to start the engine, and short trips with the heater, defroster, and heated seats running can leave the charging system playing catch-up. The Alberta Motor Association has a good read on how a block heater helps protect your battery in the cold.

Signs Your Alternator May Be Failing

Alternator trouble often shows up slowly. Keep an eye out for:

  • A battery warning light on your dash
  • Headlights or dash lights that look dim or flicker
  • A battery that keeps going flat, even a newer one
  • A car that starts after a boost but dies again soon after
  • A whining or grinding noise from the front of the engine
  • Power windows or other electrics acting slow

Many of these signs can also point to a weak battery, a loose belt, or a bad connection. That’s why we test before we replace anything. If you’re not sure where to start, our guide on the signs your car battery is dying explains how the two problems differ.

How a Mobile Alternator Visit Usually Works

No towing to a shop just to find out what’s wrong. Here’s what to expect:

Some vehicles have alternators that are tucked away and harder to reach. Ask us on the call and we’ll let you know what to expect for yours.

Test First, So You Don’t Pay for the Wrong Part

A dead battery and a failing alternator can look exactly the same from the driver’s seat. If the alternator is the real problem and only the battery gets swapped, the new battery can end up drained too.

So we start with a test. Sometimes the fix may turn out to be simpler than a new alternator, like a corroded terminal or a loose connection.

If the battery is the weak link, we can handle a battery replacement on the spot. For other electrical faults, see our electrical and lighting services, and if a warning light points somewhere else, our engine diagnostics page explains how we track it down.

Alternator Questions We Hear a Lot

In many cases, yes. It depends on your vehicle and how easy the alternator is to get to. Tell us the make, model, and year when you call, and we’ll let you know if it’s something we can do on site.

It’s hard to tell from the symptoms alone. If the car starts after a boost but dies again soon after, the alternator may not be charging. If it sits overnight and won’t start, it could be the battery or something draining it. A test is the surest way to know.

Not for long. The car will run off the battery until the battery runs out, and then it can stall, sometimes in traffic. It’s best to get it checked soon.

It depends on your vehicle and the part it needs. We’ll test first and talk through the cost with you before any work starts.

That depends on the vehicle. Some alternators are easy to reach and others take longer. We can give you an idea when you call.
