One Belt, Several Big Jobs

The serpentine belt is the long rubber belt at the front of your engine. It snakes around a set of pulleys, which is where the name comes from, and uses the engine’s power to spin several parts at once.

On many vehicles, that includes:

  • The alternator, which charges your battery and runs the electrics
  • The power steering pump, on cars that don’t use electric steering
  • The AC compressor, which keeps your air conditioning working
  • The water pump on many engines, which keeps the engine cool

Because so much depends on one belt, a break can stop several things at once. The battery stops charging, steering can feel heavy, and on many engines the temperature can climb fast. If your belt snaps while driving, pull over somewhere safe and give us a call.

Signs Your Belt Needs Attention

Belts usually give some warning before they fail. Watch and listen for:

  • A squeal or chirp from the front of the engine, often on cold starts or when the AC kicks on
  • Cracks, fraying, or missing chunks on the ribbed side of the belt
  • A shiny, glazed look on the belt surface
  • A battery warning light or a temperature gauge that climbs
  • Steering that suddenly feels heavier than usual

Noise doesn’t always mean the belt itself is worn. A tired tensioner or pulley can cause squeals too, and it can wear out a new belt early.

How a Mobile Belt Visit Usually Works

No need to drive a squealing car across town. Here’s what to expect:

On some engines the belt is easy to reach, and on others it takes more work. Ask us on the call and we’ll let you know what to expect for your vehicle.

Belts, Batteries, and Edmonton Winters

Rubber belts harden and crack with age, and cold weather makes them stiffer. That’s often why a belt that seemed fine in summer starts squealing on the first frosty mornings. The Alberta Motor Association shares useful tips on getting your vehicle ready for winter.

A slipping or worn belt can also leave your battery undercharged, because the alternator can’t spin the way it should. If your battery keeps going flat, the belt is worth a look along with the battery itself.

A fall maintenance visit is a good time to have the belt checked before the cold really sets in.

Serpentine Belt vs. Timing Belt

They sound alike but do very different jobs. The serpentine belt sits on the outside of the engine and runs the accessories we listed above. A timing belt sits inside the engine and keeps its internal parts moving in sync, and replacing one is a much bigger job.

This page is about serpentine belts. If you have a question about a timing belt, give us a call and ask.

Serpentine Belt Questions We Hear a Lot

A squeal is a warning, not an emergency on its own, but it’s worth getting checked soon. If the belt breaks, the battery stops charging and many engines can overheat, so pull over somewhere safe if that happens.

It varies a lot from one vehicle to another, so your owner’s manual is the best guide. The belt’s condition matters too. Cracks, fraying, or noise are good reasons to have it looked at even if it isn’t due yet.

In many cases, yes. It depends on your vehicle and how easy the belt is to reach. Tell us the make, model, and year when you call, and we’ll let you know if it’s something we can do on site.

Sometimes. A worn tensioner or pulley can cause noise and wear out a new belt early. We’ll tell you what we see and talk it through with you before doing any extra work.

It depends on your vehicle and the parts it needs. We’ll check it first and go over the cost with you before any work starts.
